Canary Islands - Spain

Canary Islands comprise of 7 main islands and some smaller ones, its an autonomous region of Spain. Its located in the Atlantic Ocean and is around 100 km (62 mi) west of Morocco and the disputed Western Sahara. The most populous archipelago of the Macaronesia region, the other archipelago's are the Azores, Madeira which are part of Portugal and the nation of Cape Verde. The region comprise of two provinces namely Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas. Its the only Spanish region with two capitals and has similar names as the provinces, namely Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the western part of the archipelago and comprise out of 4 main islands. Tenerife is the biggest of all the islands and has with Mount Teide the third highest volcano in the world and the highest elevation of Spain with 3,718 metre (12,198 ft). La Gomera is like all the island of volcanic origin and due its rough rocky terrain, the local people created an language of whistling called Silbo Gomero. El Hierro is the smallest and most southwestern island and point of Spain. And its an UNESCO Biosphere Reserve which attracts nature lovers. La Palma is the fifth largest island and the steepest, very volcanic and all ingredients of an tsunami are here possible. Beautiful nature and an good place to gaze the stars, several observatories build here for that purpose. The province of Las Palmas is the eastern part and comprise out of 3 main islands. Gran Canaria despite its name is the third largest island of the archipelago and it act as an mini continent. Many climate regions are found on this island, forests in the north and desert in the south. And all in between within an sub-tropical climate which attracts many tourists for an sunny vacation. Fuerteventura is the second largest island of the Canary Islands and the oldest of them all but no volcanic activity since 5000 years or so. With around 3000 hours of sunshine and lot of beaches its an ideal vacation destination. Lanzarote the closest to the African mainland and so first settled by men and visited by the Romans and eventually became an part of Spain. Volcanic active and the climate is kind of desert due its proximity to the Sahara. Canary Islands has an population of around 2,1 milliom and millions of tourist that visited the islands trough the year. So lets take an look at the flag.


Three vertical bands in the colors white, blue and yellow. Blue and white are the colors of the island Tenerife, the city and province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and flag similar to Scotland. Blue and yellow are the colors of the island of Gran Canaria and Las Palmas the city. The province use an blue and white flag instead. This flag above is the civic flag and there is also an state flag with coat of arms. The two supports are dogs and the islands named after that animal, canis is Latin for dog which were found when they discover the islands. The shield has an blue background with 7 white triangle shape figures. The blue is the sea and the figure are the islands. The royal Spanish crown on top and under the motto "Oceano" which has probably to do with the Ocean. Fine simple flag that not everyone agree with it because the whole thing is to Gran Canaria.
