Chukotka - Russia

Chukotka is the most northeastern subdivision of the Russian Federation and its half the size of Alaska. Its maybe big in area but very sparsely in population, around the 50 thousand. The Russian Federation use several types of subdivisions, lets explain them.
A: republics are autonomous areas with an large non-Russian population, there are 22 republics.
B: Krai same as an oblast but lower in population, larger in area and mostly found at the edges of this immense country. There are 8 of them.
C: Oblast is the same as an province or an state, there are 46 of them.
D: Autonomous Oblast has more control over its own business, only 1 exist.
E: Autonomous Okrug are large areas with an sparsely ethnic population. okrug are similar to districts, lesser autonomy than en republic but more than an oblast. There are 4 of them.
F: Federal City are equal to an oblast and comprises Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Sevastopol. That meant 3 of them.
Chukotka is in this matter classified as an okrug and it's an cold one, very cold one. The area is very mountainous and the northern parts there is the arctic desert. South of that desolate place we get the windy tundra with its mosses and shrubs growing there. The south of Chukotka the taiga were the pines and spruces are growing. It's also the closest distance to the United States from the Chukchi Peninsula, on an clear day it's possible to see Alaska over the Bering Sea. 52.5% of the population are Russians but the original Chukchi made up for 26.7%. There are the closest relatives to the Native Americans and are nomadic people group which lives from hunt, fishing and herding reindeer. So lets take an look at the flag.

On the left an white triangle that symbolize the ice and snow which Chukotka mostly covered year around. The blue part is the color of the Chukchi, also symbolize the many rivers in the area. The Russian roundel points out its part of Russia. The yellow circle stands for the sun that rise as first here in Russia. Also symbolize the gold and the indigenous people of Chukotka. Good flag but i don't think the Russian flag is needed here.

Alba Iulia - Romania

Alba Iulia is an ancient city that originated from the time of the Dacians which were conquered by the Romans, it was called in those days Apoulon and the Romans changed it to Apulum. Then Slavic tribes came in and called the place Bălgrad which means "white castle". Next are the Hungarians which called the place Gyulafehérvár and there was another Fehérvár, namely Székesfehérvár then the Hungarian royal residence and Székes meant "seat". Gyula comes from an name of an Hungarian warlord from the 10th century. Gyulafehérvár is translated to "white castle of Julius" and eventually in Romanian it become Alba Iulia. Which derived from the Latin name of the city Civatatem Albam, the Albam parts derived from Apoulon or Apulum and that word meant "white". Al lot of white and also Germans came to this part and called the place Weissenburg. Alba Iulia has around 109 thousand people and can be found the old region of Transylvania. Also it was the capital once of the principality of Transylvania, but still the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Alba Iulia. Because there is still an ethic catholic Hungarian minority lives in the area in an prominently Romanian Orthodox country. Alba Iulia is an well preserved fortified city with a lot of historical sights. So lets take an look at the flag.

The flag is mostly white and two merged blue triangle on the right, white is an thing in Alba Iulia. The meaning of that is unclear to me for now. The coat of arms in the center showed three heraldic symbols of Romanian principalities, the golden eagle of Wallachia, the extinct aurochs of Moldovia and two red lions from Transylvania. Top of it an royal Romanian crown symbolize the independence of the country and union of the principalities on an field of ermine. Ermine is the fur of an stoat, this species of weasel is white with black-tipped tails. This heraldic pattern uses by royals and very high nobility. The mural crown represented an city in an republic and also the seat of the district Alba. The black eagle on top of the crown tell us it was once the capital of Transylvania. White is the red line in Alba Iulia with coat of arms represented union.

Székesfehérvár - Hungary

Székesfehérvár is an Hungarian city which can be found between the capital Budapest and Lake Balaton. The city is capitol of Fejér County and the population is around 272 thousand with al the suburbs combined. Now its time for some name explain and its original called Fehérvár which means "white castle" and there is another Fehérvár. That one is located in present day Romania in an part belongs once to Hungary. By the way, that town was originally called Gyulafehérvár and now it goes as Alba Iulia. The part "Székes" is Hungarian for "seat" because this city was once an royal residence of the Hungarian kings. There is also an German version of the name, Stuhlweißenburg and anybody know some German get the idea of the Hungarian name. Székesfehérvár was an important city in the past because its lays in the center of trade routes from the Balkans to Italy and from Vienna and to Budapest. Many kings are crowned in this place, 43 of them and the last one in 1526. 15 kings find there last resting place and the most famous one Stephen I of Hungary, which became an the patron saint of Hungary. The city has many things to see from the time period of the Hungarian kings. So lets take an look at the flag.

The flag has two colors in vertical position blue and red. The blue stands for the hereafter of the many buried Hungarian kings and the color is royal, the city of kings is an nickname for Székesfehérvár. The red stands for maybe for bravery and the blood of the kings of Hungary, i guess this because didn't find any information about it. The coat of arms is in the center with an white caste with open gates. The open gates stands for that everyone is welcome in Székesfehérvár. The crown is from an duke i think, also no information about that. The colors working well together and the coat of arms is solid.

South Holland - The Netherlands

South Holland the most populous Dutch province with around 3,6 million inhabitants. The capital of the province is The Hague (Den Haag) and its also the residence of the royal family and seat of government. Rotterdam is one of the major ports in the world. Leiden has the oldest university in the country, north of it there is the Bollenstreek which has an colorful sight of the tulips and other flowers. Many beach towns to relax when the sun is shining, towns like Noordwijk, Katwijk, Scheveningen and Hoek van Holland. The mighty river Rhine ends somehow disappointingly but its once the northern border of the Roman Empire, so many finds are found there, places of Roman heritage are like Valkenburg and Alphen aan den Rijn. The university city of Delft has royal connection which many important members of the royal family is buried in the Nieuwe Kerk. Beside all that urbanization the eastern part called Groene Hart (literally green heart) still used mainly for agriculture. South of the Rotterdam metropolitan area there is the national park De Bieschbosch and area of wetlands, small lakes and rivers. So lets take an look at the flag.

The lion of Holland is symbolize the always victorious lion of Judah. The colors red and yellow are historical counts of Holland colors. The formal county Holland and its predecessors use similar flags and symbols since the Crusades. Meaning of the colors are lost in history. This is flag is adopted in 1986 before they used from 1948 and three vertical striped flag with the colors yellow-red-yellow. The province of North Holland still use an similar flag. Bold, simple and historical inspired flag.

Southern Denmark - Denmark

Southern Denmark is an region in Denmark, its called in Danish "Region Syddanmark". Before 2007 Denmark uses counties (amter), there were 13 counties and 3 municipalities with county status like Copenhagen, Frederiksberg and the island of Bornholm. The abolished counties are replaced with 5 regions, also the Danish municipalities are reduced from 270 to 98. Southern Denmark comprise the southern part of the Jutland peninsula, the island of Funen and smaller islands like Ærø en Langeland. Despite that Odense is the biggest city is the smaller city of Vejle is the capital. Currently there are now 22 municipalities and the region of Southern Denmark has an population of around 1,2 million. In the region is also an minority of North Schleswig Germans there is around an population of 15 thousand speaks German as its first language. They have linguistic rights in accordance with the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. South of the border in Germany there are living around 50 thousand Danish and have the same rights. These minorities live here for centuries and borders may shifting once in an while those people stayed were they are. So let take an look at the flag.

They using an logo flag because the new Danish regions are not allowed to use community money to create coat of arms and fancy flags. So this the result the name of the region in Danish and dynamic green line, there also inverted versions of this flag. The green line has few meanings.
First its an outline of Southern Denmark, left you see South Jutland, right the island of Funen. The island of Langeland is attached to Funen and the island of Als is attached to South Jutland.
Second the line symbolized the cohesion of the region.
Third the line stands for growth and the unique nature.
Modern flag but drop the words and inverted the colors, that will works slightly better.

Green Bay - United States / Wisconsin

Green Bay the third largest city in the state of Wisconsin, its located at an bay with the same name as the city. The Green Bay (the actual bay) is an arm of Lake Michigan which French explorers discovered in the end of the 17th century. The first French there named the bay "la baie des Puants" literary "the bay of stinkerds", given by their native guides to insult an tribe that lived in the area. Later French visitors were perplexed by the name and its origin, the thought its derived from the smell of swamps. So they changed it to Baie Verte and when English take over they translated the name to Green Bay. The city has an population of around 105 thousand and with all suburbs together its has around 320 thousand people. By American standards Green Bay is considered an small town and this one has something famous and unique for this kind of city. That things is an professional sports team and in this case an American Football franchise of the NFL. Also unique this is the only North American sports team that owned by the fans and its totally an non-profit organisation. Founded in 1919 the Green Bay Packers are one of the successful NFL-teams with 13 league championsships, which of them are four Superbowl victories. The legendary coach of the Green Bay Packers Vince Lombardi is honored which Superbowl trophy is named after him. So lets take an look at the flag.

The flag has an upper green part which is divided by an narrow wavy white line, the lower part is blue. Those colors represented the land and water of the Green Bay area, the water has in spring an blue-green color. In the center the seal of Green Bay. The flag is adopted in 2004 the year of Green Bay 150th birthday, this is the year of incorporation but the city is actually much older since 1634. The big no of vexillologists the words and numbers says, City of Green Bay and the year of found 1854. Also the Green Bay Packers logo is on it, think this the only flag in the world with an sports team logo on it. Above the "G" logo you see an tower-like thing which represented manufacturing. On the seal they added an extra text, Titletown, U.S.A. because of the many titles of the Packers. Typical city flag but not that busy, get rid of the text and swap the tower and the "G" and its better.

Calgary - Canada

Calgary the largest city in the Canadian province of Alberta with an population of around 1,2 million Calgarians. Close to Rocky Mountains its an distance of 80 km (50 mi) east of the city made this place and surroundings an populair touristic destination. The west of Calgary are the mountains but east of it the prairies starts. Calgary started as an fort of the Mounted Police in 1875, it was there for act against whiskey trade with the natives and protect the important fur trade. In 1883 the railroad was connected with Calgary and after that the city grows significantly slowly bigger. Also around that time Calgary became an major hub of the cattle markt and meatpacking industry. Because of the cheap land many settlers came here to do something in agriculture, since 1912 the biggest rodeo show held annually named the Calgary Stampede. The next import economical factor was the petroleum industry, an oilfield was found in 1924. The oil make Calgary big especially around the boom years in the 40's, 70's and 2000. When the petroleum industry is low its backed up by agriculture, tourism and the technology sector. Nowadays we have an modern multicultural city with skyscrapers. So lets take an look at the flag.

This flag is an result of an contest and its adopted in 1983. The upper en lower edges has an white colored and the rest is red. Slightly on the left half there is an stylized "C" with an cowboy hat. The color red represented the uniform of the Mounted Police and lively history. The red and white also represented hospitality and spirit of Calgary.
The "C" stands obviously for Calgary, its centennial celebration, the character, change, culture, charm. The hat symbolize the city's cowboy past, the Calgary Stampede, the Smithbilt cowboy hat brand. And represented also hospitality. Good example for other North American cities for an flag without words, seals and other busy design.
