Calgary - Canada

Calgary the largest city in the Canadian province of Alberta with an population of around 1,2 million Calgarians. Close to Rocky Mountains its an distance of 80 km (50 mi) east of the city made this place and surroundings an populair touristic destination. The west of Calgary are the mountains but east of it the prairies starts. Calgary started as an fort of the Mounted Police in 1875, it was there for act against whiskey trade with the natives and protect the important fur trade. In 1883 the railroad was connected with Calgary and after that the city grows significantly slowly bigger. Also around that time Calgary became an major hub of the cattle markt and meatpacking industry. Because of the cheap land many settlers came here to do something in agriculture, since 1912 the biggest rodeo show held annually named the Calgary Stampede. The next import economical factor was the petroleum industry, an oilfield was found in 1924. The oil make Calgary big especially around the boom years in the 40's, 70's and 2000. When the petroleum industry is low its backed up by agriculture, tourism and the technology sector. Nowadays we have an modern multicultural city with skyscrapers. So lets take an look at the flag.

This flag is an result of an contest and its adopted in 1983. The upper en lower edges has an white colored and the rest is red. Slightly on the left half there is an stylized "C" with an cowboy hat. The color red represented the uniform of the Mounted Police and lively history. The red and white also represented hospitality and spirit of Calgary.
The "C" stands obviously for Calgary, its centennial celebration, the character, change, culture, charm. The hat symbolize the city's cowboy past, the Calgary Stampede, the Smithbilt cowboy hat brand. And represented also hospitality. Good example for other North American cities for an flag without words, seals and other busy design.
