South Holland - The Netherlands

South Holland the most populous Dutch province with around 3,6 million inhabitants. The capital of the province is The Hague (Den Haag) and its also the residence of the royal family and seat of government. Rotterdam is one of the major ports in the world. Leiden has the oldest university in the country, north of it there is the Bollenstreek which has an colorful sight of the tulips and other flowers. Many beach towns to relax when the sun is shining, towns like Noordwijk, Katwijk, Scheveningen and Hoek van Holland. The mighty river Rhine ends somehow disappointingly but its once the northern border of the Roman Empire, so many finds are found there, places of Roman heritage are like Valkenburg and Alphen aan den Rijn. The university city of Delft has royal connection which many important members of the royal family is buried in the Nieuwe Kerk. Beside all that urbanization the eastern part called Groene Hart (literally green heart) still used mainly for agriculture. South of the Rotterdam metropolitan area there is the national park De Bieschbosch and area of wetlands, small lakes and rivers. So lets take an look at the flag.


The lion of Holland is symbolize the always victorious lion of Judah. The colors red and yellow are historical counts of Holland colors. The formal county Holland and its predecessors use similar flags and symbols since the Crusades. Meaning of the colors are lost in history. This is flag is adopted in 1986 before they used from 1948 and three vertical striped flag with the colors yellow-red-yellow. The province of North Holland still use an similar flag. Bold, simple and historical inspired flag.
